About Sydney

Including tips for the best time to visit Sydney

As Australia's largest city and home to the iconic Opera House, it's no wonder Sydney is often mistaken as the country's capital. Whether you're into history, nature, fashion or food, this city has it all.

Many of Sydney's most popular attractions are in the compact downtown area, including the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and countless restaurants and shops. There's also a large selection of museums and galleries like The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Sydney, and the Australian National Maritime Museum. And for some fresh air, be sure to visit both the Royal Botanic Garden and the Victorian-style Centennial Park.

On the way out to the Eastern Suburbs, you'll find the world-famous Bondi Beach, frequented by surfers and swimmers alike for its big, warm waves. Another main attraction is Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, offering panoramic views over Sydney from its West Head lookout point. Then check out some Aboriginal rock paintings and cave art at any one of +800 well-preserved archaeological sites.

Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is about 5 miles south of the city and can be reached easily by train, bus, and taxi.

I visited for the VIVID festival and was not dissapointed. Amazing sights, very safe and clean. Ciurcular Quay and the gardens were outstanding. The transport system works well and is within easy access of most hotels. Vist the Rocks area for markets and food. excellent stay.

Very busy city and a lot of traffic.

Very busy city and a lot of traffic. The good side of it was that it was easy to go everywhere by just walking. Our hotel is accessible to everywhere like the skytower, china town, opera house, harbour, etc. Good.

I love Sydney.

May 28, 2019

I love Sydney. The people are wonderfully polite and helpful. The views are stunning. we joined a 'free' city walk from the Town Hall at 1030 on Sunday. You pay what you think it is worth at the end of the 2.5 hours. This is a great idea but I did feel that some others on the tour were a bit mean! Our guide, Kelly, was absolutely superb. She walked at a sensible pace (i.e. quite fast) and everyone could hear her. Also buy the Opel card when you arrive. Also take the red and blue hop on and hop off buses. Once you have done that and the city walk, you have 'done' a fabulous city and seen some bits others don't know exist!

We did two excellent hikes.

May 27, 2019

We did two excellent hikes. one day we took the fast ferry to Manly and then walked to the Spit bridge. it was a great walk. Beautiful beaches, lovely homes, interesting hike through the national park along the shore. We also took the train to Katoomba ($15 round trip) and hiked in the Blue Mountains. They are beautiful and the hike was excellent. As always in Australia you get to talk to friendly people along the way. Much better than taking a tour bus. We were in Australia for 2 weeks and it was nice to have two days that were very fun and low cost. We also liked the food in Sydney. Many restaurants, any ethnic cuisine you want and prices were good. you could eat "cheap and good" in Sydney. We ate at some excellent restaurants. Very easy to get around, loved the Opal card.
